2007 was a huge year for beer in Charleston thanks to the opening of COAST Brewing, and a huge year for beer in South Carolinas thanks to the draconian cap on beer's alcohol content being lifted. Jaime Tenny, the female half of COAST, led the charge for that legislative victory with plans to open a brewery with her husband, David Merritt.
COAST is located in the Navy Yard at Noisette in North Charleston, a repurposed area being used by a plethora of hip businesses. The brewery is housed in an old Naval records station, where their 7-barrel system and three 14-barrel fermenters churn out beers of alarming quality with high demand. Local venues alone sit on waiting lists for the stuff, but the tight supply allows for the fully hands-on approach that has made COAST famous with casual beer drinkers close by as well as beer geeks all over the country.
The debut beer from COAST was HopArt IPA, which remains a year-round to this day along with 32/50 Kölsch. Seasonals abound, now two-at-a-time thanks to some fermenter upgrades. Some beers also make it into 22oz bombers, but like everything else at COAST, it's a very manual labor of love to bottle those puppies. The good news is that they normally fly off the shelves, especially the geek gold that is Blackbeerd, the Imperial Stout, and his barrel-aged, wax-dipped cousin.

Growlers at COAST bottom-filled and capped tightly (while foaming) with care after being sanitized in their sink. Growler prices generally run $14-$18 depending on the beer. HopArt IPA and 32/50 Kölsch are generally also available in 22oz bombers, as well as select seasonals. There is also swag for your purchasing pleasure. All purchases are cash only, and parking is free right outside the brewery.
