Holy City Brewing is the brainchild of a quartet of gentlemen with differing backgrounds, but a common passion for craft beer. Joel Carl and Sean Nemitz were partners in a rickshaw company downtown, where they homebrewed on a 15-gallon system made of welded ex-bicycle parts in the off season. Mac Minaudo was an Asheville transplant looking to purchase some space to continue his work in the bio-diesel industry. Chris Brown was an eager brewer from Atlanta ready to strike out on his own after a stint at Gordon Biersch.

The four put their minds and resources together to open Holy City Brewing in Mac's 4,000 square-foot warehouse space in North Charleston. After an inordinate amount of hands-on work fixing up all aspects of the building, a brand spanking new 15-barrel system was installed, along with three 25-barrel fermenters two brite tanks totalling 45 barrels.

The brewery launched in the summer of 2011 with two year-round beers, Holy City Pilsner and Pluff Mud Porter, as well as a short-lived first entry in their experimental "Fish Bowl" series. And handful of seasonals have followed, but Holy City has really gained a following for their year-rounds. There are plans to package in the future, but they remain draft-only for now (with extremely reasonable growler prices).

As of Saturday, March 31st, Holy City will also offer homebrew ingredients for sale!

Tour & tastings

Tours are offered throughout the designated hours. In conjunction with your tour, as of June 2013, you can also enjoy up to 48oz* of beer on the premises! Full pints are $5, half-pints are $3, and flights of 4 4oz tasters will run you $6. *Consumption of beer over 8% ABW is limited to 16oz.

Growler fills

Holy City Brewing growler fills cost $10. Though they will fill any growler, you can purchase an empty Holy City growler for $5. Growlers are bottom-filled from taps running directly out of their cold room, behind a particularly cozy bar with a shop sink handily filled with dilute sanitizer. They'll even seal your growler with a plastic ring that gets heat-shrunk by a blowtorch (wicked). Some fun swag is available, including rad leather koozies for your pint glass. Cash and major credit cards are accepted, and parking is free and extensive just outside the door.
