Mellow Mushroom (Avondale)
The newest addition to the Lowcountry Mellow family is this one, located in a huge, two-story space in the up-and-coming Avondale district of West Ashley. The interior is a bombastic tribute to old movie theaters and a handful of local characters, including superstar chef du jour Sean Brock depicted in royal garb, on a throne, holding a piglet. You can thank Charleston-based artist Carl Janes for your acid flashback.
Mellow Avondale sports more beers than the other two area locations, clocking in at 30 in total, with frequent appearances by Westbrook and Holy City. Their customizable flights are extremely reasonable, a mere $6.50 last time I checked, and the pizza is as solid as ever. They also take full advantage of the size and theme, with weekly movie nights recently added to their calendar.
